What is it about?

Everyone thinks of platelet aggregation as the way to measure platelet reactivity. But there are much simpler ways of measuring how reactive platelets are, that can be used without the need for special equipment or expertise. Meaurements can be performed almost anywhere.

Why is it important?

Routine measurements of platelet reactivity can be used to identify defective platelets as the cause of enhanced bleeding, to identify hyperactivity in association with thrombotic events, and to determine the effectiveness of administered antiplatelet agents. This they provide routes to better diagnosis and treatment.

Perspectives

This article, written with my very last PhD student, is the culmination of 40 years of continuous research on platelets, and I truly hope it is helpful to those intent on using measurements of platelet reactivity in their clinical activities.
