What is it about?
This study presents the results of a survey of environmental educators working in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais after the introduction of new environmental education regulations for environmental licensing. It explores their experiences with participatory socio-environmental assessments, the methods they use to engage communities, the challenges they face in practice, and their views on how environmental education can be improved. The findings provide a snapshot of how the new regulatory framework was being implemented from the perspective of professionals working directly in the field.

Why is it important?
Environmental education is essential for ensuring that communities have a meaningful voice in environmental licensing processes. By gathering the perspectives of practitioners, this study identifies both the strengths and the limitations of a recently introduced regulatory framework in Minas Gerais. The findings can help environmental consultants, educators, policymakers, licensing authorities, and researchers better understand the practical challenges of implementing participatory environmental education and identify opportunities to improve environmental governance and community engagement.
Perspectives
As one of the authors, I see this publication as an important opportunity to document the experiences of environmental educators during a period of regulatory change. Rather than evaluating the legislation only from a legal or theoretical perspective, we wanted to understand how it was being applied in practice by those working directly with communities and environmental licensing. I hope this study encourages continued dialogue among environmental professionals and contributes to the development of more participatory, effective, and socially responsive environmental education programs.
