What is it about?
We evaluated rates and risk factors of complications in patients undergoing a kidney biopsy at two university medical centers from 2015-2017. Among 159 study participants, 8% required blood transfusions, 2% required an angiographic interventions to stop bleeding, and 20% underwent imaging studies to evaluate for bleeding. We also noted several risk factors that were independently associated with higher risk of bleeding including female sex, lower platelet count, and higher blood urea nitrogen level. Hospitalized participants had higher rate of complications than 97 non-hospitalized participants.
