What is it about?

As the second-largest chromosome in humans, chromosome 2 has 243 million base pairs and 1490 genes, making up 8% of the whole DNA in the cells. Equally, several genetic diseases are connected to chromosome 2, including different types of cancer. This book chapter discusses about 50 genes in chromosome 2 and their role in various cancers.

Why is it important?

RALB, a member of Ras proteins, is one of the genes in chromosome 2, involved in cell proliferation and survival. Abberation in the genes causes uncontrolled proliferation, leading to cancer. Chromosome 2 possesses similar multiple oncogenes and proto-oncogenes in it. Considering thousands of genes in chromosome 2, consolidating the significant genes involved in cancer types and their role under a chapter helps researchers understand and refer to them under a roof.

Perspectives

Writing a book chapter is exciting in itself. However, researching multiple articles and learning about cancer genetics was insightful and informative. It took weeks to curate and organize them carefully while keeping in mind to provide accurate information. In the end, it was a rewarding experience.
