What is it about?

Chapter 1 "Heliotropium an ethnomedicinal plant: past and present uses", is part of the book "New Findings from Natural Substances" Tiezzi, A., Ovidi, E., & M. Karpiński, T. (Eds.). (2022). The authors address the etnomdeicinal use, with emphasis on H. indicum and other species of the genus Heliotropium.

Why is it important?

The chemical constituents and biological activity of species of the genus Heliotropium have been extensively studied. This genus is rich in pyrrolizidine alkaloids, but also its phenolic components and volatile terpenes have interesting applications that are summarized in this chapter.

Perspectives

In this review, the ethnopharmacological use of the different Heliotrope species has been highlighted. This is important since numerous species of the genus have been studied, a large number of secondary metabolites isolated from different parts of the plant, and numerous biological tests carried out that support its medicinal use around the world.
