What is it about?

X-rays were discovered in 1895 by Professor Roentgen.Till the year 1980 dental xray films were used to capture radiological details of the dental tissues. In 1989 dr Frances Mouyens brought digital radiography into existence. Intraoral dental radiographs are of two types i.e. Bite-wings and Periapical radiographs. Bitewings radiographs are used to detect proximal dental caries and for quantification of alveolar bone level. Periapical x rays record the entire crown and root and also the bone around it. Digital receptors used for making intraoral radiographs, are of two types namely wired or rigid sensors. Film sizes are of three sizes i.e. 0, 1, and 2. OPG xrays are done on more specialized equipment called Ortho Pantogram machine X-rays are known to have deterministic and stochastic effects. Harmful effects of radiation can lead to detrimental effects such as cancer which calls for protection against repeated radiation for professionals and patients. Restriction of x rays to need based x rays is important. Patient protection includes lead collars and lead aprons.

Why is it important?

X-rays are really a precious tool, it remains the duty of the dentist and assistants to ensure radiation safety for patients and themselves.

Perspectives

this is the chapter valuable for the young undergraduate students and dental chair side assistant.
