What is it about?
The chapter highlights some of the salient issues for new immigrants from a refugee background in the Riverina region of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. This research found refugee immigrants appreciate the lifestyle and opportunities offered in rural Australia, but experienced difficulties related to limited services compared with metropolitan centres.

Why is it important?
The Research recommends that while refugees and migrants can play a role in arresting the decline of the rural areas, there needs to be careful planning so their needs are met. Without this then in the long term they will also leave and move to metropolitan areas.
