What is it about?
The quality of a sewn garment is dependent on the quality of its seams that are the basic structural element. The factors affecting seam quality in garments include sewing thread type and stitch density. Making the right choice of these helps in getting quality seams in garments. However, the choice of suitable sewing threads and stitch densities for particular fabrics can only be determined through testing. A study conducted to evaluate the properties of fabrics used for Ghanaian basic school uniforms (Danquah, 2018) was inconclusive in identifying the most suitable option, thereby underscoring the need for further research. In response, follow-up studies by Monnie and Fianu (2021), Monnie, Fianu & Vandyck (2021) expanded the scope of analysis and successfully identified a fabric suitable for Ghanaian public basic school uniforms. Building on these foundations, the current study investigated the optimal thread type and stitch density to enhance seam performance in the identified fabric for school uniform applications. Therefore this research was conducted to determine sewing thread brand and stitch density suitable for seams for a selected fabric (79% polyester and 21% cotton) for public basic school uniforms in Ghana.

Why is it important?
This research has helped to establish a suitable sewing thread brand and stitch density that can aid in the achievement of good quality school uniforms.
Perspectives
This research contributes to the growing body of work aimed at enhancing the quality of basic school uniforms in Ghana. It builds on earlier efforts, notably a study by Danquah (2018), which evaluated the properties of fabrics used for Ghanaian basic school uniforms but was inconclusive in determining the most suitable option highlighting the need for further investigation. In response, Monnie and Fianu (2021) conducted a follow-up study that expanded the scope of analysis and successfully identified a fabric appropriate for use in public basic schools. Building on this foundation, the present study explores the optimal thread type and stitch density required to improve seam performance in the identified fabric. This research provides valuable insights that support the broader goal of achieving higher quality standards in school uniforms.
