What is it about?

The main focus of this study was to evaluate all the available clinical data as to determine whether Tianpetine (STABLON) is an effective and safe alternative for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder. Moreover emphasis was given on unravelling the cellular and molecular events that are associated with Tianeptine's apparent anti-depressant response.

Why is it important?

This study, I believe, is of significant importance in the fields of psychiatry and psychopharmacology as it expands the understanding of the cellular and molecular perturbations that take place in the brain during Major Depressive Disorder. Specifically, the most commonly accepted theory regarding the development of depression is a reduction in the levels of certain brain chemicals, especially serotonin (Monoamine Hypothesis). While most clinically available antidepressants act by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain, Tianeptine was initially shown to act by decreasing its levels. Regardless of reducing serotonin availability in the brain, a vast number of both animal and human studies have shown that Tianeptine is a very effective antidepressant, producing anti-depressant responses similar to those of the other clinically available anti-depressant, if not better. In this study the antidepressant effects of tianeptine have been explained using novel theories regarding the pathology of depression; interestingly in this study, tianeptine has been shown to promote cellular and molecular events that are responsible for the normal functioning of the brain.

Perspectives

This article was based on my dissertation module as a final year student at the University of Bath. It was a great pleasure to work with Dr. Bailey and Abdulrahman Almatroudi and their input was of great importasance as to achieve this outcome. This article was very interesting and enlightening to me as it significantly increased my understanding of the causes and treatment of depression, as it goes beyond the classical 'monoamine hypothesis of depression'.
