What is it about?
Microbioreactors are scaled down versions of conventional macro scale bioreactors. We review the different elements that are required to be controlled such as pH, oxygen, mechanical forces and transport of fluids. The methods of microbioreactor fabrication are described along with their applications, including for drug discovery and biotherapeutics.

Why is it important?
The review provides a overview of the modes of operation of microbioreactors and their requirements which includes materials, physiochemical factors (temperature, pH and oxygen), mechanical forces, fluidic control and detection elements. The different methods of fabrication - including photolithography, hot embossing, milling and micro-injection moulding - are described. A variety of applications are described which includes bioprocess optimisation, tissue engineering and drug and toxicological screening.
