Why is it important?

Bipolar disorder is under-recognized and often not treated or mistreated as depression with resultant exascerbation of manic or hypomanic symptoms. This study describes the importance of APRNs in primary care recognizing the importance of screening for bipolar disorder in depressed patients in order to appropriately treat or refer these patients to improve their quality of life.

Perspectives

This manuscript is the result of my doctoral dissertation research at Drexel University and is a labor of several years. My overarching goal and hope is that APRNs will want to learn more about bipolar disorder through this article, and that future research, education, and collaborative efforts will continue to improve the critical connections between the primary care and mental health care of patients.
