What is it about?

This study used a carbon dioxide laser with scaling and root planing in the treatment of chronic adult moderate to severe periodontitis. The findings suggest a modest benefit to the adjunctive use of the laser inside the pocket when evaluating the microbial biofilm and attachment levels after six months of healing.

Why is it important?

This may provide additional benefit to patients when receiving non-surgical periodontal therapy in comparison to conventional scaling and root planing alone for the treatment of moderate to severe periodontitis.

Perspectives

More study is needed to evaluate the true benefits of laser therapy in this population of patients which present with the most common oral disease known to man.
