What is it about?

There are hundreds of herbs claimed by traditional medicine practitioners to posses antidiabetic efficacy. But, there is the need for a scientific evidence. This is a report that updates information available on the herbal products that have been established to have evidence-based efficacy in treatment of diabetes melitus. The antidiabetic active compounds were identified. Interactions of these herbs with synthetic drugs were verified and discussed.

Why is it important?

There is a very high prevalence in the use of antidiabetic herbal products as well as high incidence in the concurrent use of herbal medicines and synthetic drugs. Since herbal products contain several compounds, its concomitant use with synthetic drugs can result in beneficial or adverse effects. In this paper, we analysed the possibilities and outcomes of these interactions.

Perspectives

It is my hope that this paper will provide the reader with relevant information to be able to make informed decision on using herbal products in the management of diabetes. Herbal products are increasingly becoming popular due to several factors including cost-effectiveness and high safety margins.
