What is it about?

NAFPD is a relatively new disease entity which is being increasingly recognized in clinical practice with the rise in the obesity epidemic. It is commonly referred to as fatty pancreas or pancreatic steatosis despite the presence of validated nomenclature.

Why is it important?

This vicious cycle of fat accumulation in pancreas might play a role in the development of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. There is no approved pharmacologic therapy for NAFPD as of yet. Restriction of dietary caloric intake might have role in normalization of -cell function by reduction in pancreatic fat content.

Perspectives

Additional research is certainly required to explore the complications of NAFPD, including metabolic syndrome, pancreatic cancer, exocrine insufficiency and chronic pancreatitis.
