What is it about?

Neurons require a special fluid microenvironment to function well. Choroid plexus secretions are critical for healthy brain metabolism. Choroid plexus failure in disease adversely impacts the operations of neurons and glia. Both the blood-CSF barrier, and blood-brain barrier, essentially regulate material flow to the brain.

Why is it important?

The choroid plexus secretions are vital for brain development and response to brain injury. When choroid plexus is damaged, the reduced (altered) supply of trophins, hormones and vitamins to neuronal networks result in less optimal growth or recovery from disease or insult.

Perspectives

This paper fills a gap in knowledge on how the blood-CSF barrier (choroid plexus) and cerebral capillaries work together to insure a proper environment for neurons and glia. Previous transport models have not thoroughly considered the parallel operation of these two major supply systems for the brain.
