What is it about?

Infections, and especially bloodstream infections, are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children with haematologic malignancies and solid tumors. Our study focuses on the epidemiology and outcomes of these infections, and most importantly bacteremias.

Why is it important?

To our knowledge, this is the first study from Northern Greece aiming to determine the different epidemiological characteristics and outcomes of bacteremias in pediatric hematology-oncology patients. Our findings follow the trends of other European countries, especially countries in Southeast Europe. Knowing the local epidemiology and keeping up-to-date reports of bacteremias in a hospital setting can expand our knowledge of these infections and help us improve their surveillance and prevention.

Perspectives

I hope that our research will highlight but also help readers understand the importance of the local epidemiology of bloodstream infections in such a delicate population as the paediatric oncology patients and encourage them to study the epidemiology in their respective hospital settings. By doing so, we can improve our antibiotic stewardship and prevention measures for the sake of our patients.
