What is it about?
The main current of thought states that mesenchymal stromal cells inhibit immune cell responses. However, there are some evidence that they can also stimulate immune response. This brief review report and discuss the contrasting results published on this topic to understand why mesenchymal stromal cells can give so different results.

Why is it important?
Predict the functional behaviour of mesenchymal stromal cells and the reason why these cells can either inhibit or activate immune response is essential to use these cell in cell therapy. This work points out that it is not predictable the behaviour of mesenchymal stromal cells although some reports indicate that these cells can downregulate immune response.
Perspectives
I hope that this article can give new impulse to try and define better the functional characteristics of mesenchymal stromal cells taking into account that they are not only immunosuppressors but they can also stimulate immune response.
