What is it about?

This paper gives an overview of the studies investigating the association between lifestyle factors and incidence of LADA and provides a synthesis of the evidence available to date. These studies indicate that risk factors for LADA, despite it´s autoimmune nature including genetic make up, resembles those of type 2 diabetes and includes factors associated with insulin resistance including overweight, physical inactivity, low birth weight and high consumption of sweetened beverages.

Why is it important?

In order to prevent autoimmune diabetes we need to identify common, modifiable risk factors in the population. This paper indicate that it may be possible to prevent or postpone onset of LADA partly through the same lifestyle modifications as type 2 diabetes, including weight loss and increased physical activity, at least in individuals with mild autoimmunity.

Perspectives

This paper points at the need for studies elucidating lifestyle risk factors for LADA and their interaction with genetic factors, a field that is largely unexplored at present.
