What is it about?

We developed a tacrolimus (FK506) eyedrop using a novel formula. We show that tacrolimus can reach into the inside of the eye to therapeutic levels through eyedrop administration. The eyedrop treatment effectively suppressed retinal inflammation.

Why is it important?

Tacrolimus (FK506) is a powerful immune suppression drug widely used in the clinic (e.g., to prevent rejection in organ transplant or control autoimmune conditions). Currently there is no eyedrop that can dissolve FK506. In our eyedrop, FK506 is completely dissolved and can be delivered inside the eye through topic administration. The eyedrop should be effective in treating various inflammatory eye diseases.
