Why is it important?

About half of the cases which suffer coronary artery events have no known cardiovascular risk factors. This fact proposes some ignoring and unknown risks that need further attention.

Perspectives

Although far from the heart, it seems that oral bacteria play a prominent role in atherosclerotic plaque development. Possibly keeping the oral hygiene in a healthy state could reduce the growing rate of cardiovascular hospitalization and mortality.
