What is it about?
The synthesis of several imidazole carboxylic acids and imidazolium salts using aminoacids as starting materials has been carried out with high yields and purity of the compounds. Imidazole carboxylic acids had been proposed as intermediates but had not been isolated. We have used IR, NMR, HRMS and single crystal X-ray diffraction, in order to demonstrate the structures.

Why is it important?
Imidazole carboxylic acids and imidazolium salts derived from aminoacids can be used as chiral ionic liquids, as well as precursors of NHC ligands in organometallic complexes. among others.
Perspectives
The writing of this paper is the beginning of our studies with ruthenium, rhodium and iridium complexes with chiral NHC ligands. We hope it will be successful and very productive. We also hope that the present paper would be interesting and usefulness for those who work in the area.
