What is it about?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition that affects many women of reproductive age, causing irregular periods, excess hair growth, weight gain, acne, and difficulties in getting pregnant. It can also increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease. While modern medicines can help, they may cause side effects, leading some women to explore herbal or natural remedies. This study reviewed clinical trials on various medicinal plants used for PCOS. The aim was to understand if these herbs are effective and safe. The review found that certain plants—such as Cinnamon, Spearmint, White Peony, Ginger, Licorice, and Chamomile—can help improve symptoms. These herbs work in different ways: some balance hormones, others improve insulin sensitivity, reduce unwanted hair growth, support weight management, or ease menstrual pain. Many trials showed positive results, such as more regular menstrual cycles, lower male hormone levels, improved fertility, and better blood sugar control. Importantly, these herbal treatments were generally well tolerated with few side effects. However, most studies had small sample sizes, short durations, and differences in dosage, making it hard to recommend one single best treatment. Overall, herbal medicines show promise as a natural approach to managing PCOS symptoms, especially alongside healthy lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. More large, high-quality studies are needed to confirm these benefits and guide safe, effective use.

Why is it important?
PCOS affects millions of women worldwide and has no single cure. Current treatments often focus on symptom management using hormonal medications, which may have side effects. Herbal medicines could offer a gentler, more natural option—especially for women seeking alternatives or complementary therapies. By exploring these options through rigorous research, we can expand treatment choices, improve quality of life, and address both the hormonal and metabolic aspects of PCOS in a safer, more holistic way.
Perspectives
From my perspective, this publication is more than a scientific review—it’s a bridge between research and real life. I believe it can help women recognize symptoms earlier, overcome misconceptions, and feel supported in their health journey. PCOS can impact physical, emotional, and social wellbeing, and this article reinforces that awareness and education are key to change. For me, contributing to this work was a way to advocate for women’s health, break the silence around PCOS, and provide a reliable resource that could inspire both patients and healthcare providers to work together for better outcomes.
