What is it about?

Air conditioners are becoming increasingly common in Vietnam, leading to rising electricity demand and environmental concerns. This study examines how Vietnam’s energy labeling and communication program has helped reduce electricity consumption from residential air conditioners between 2021 and 2025. By comparing estimated electricity use with and without energy labeling, the research evaluates the effectiveness of the program in promoting energy efficiency. The findings show that annual electricity savings increased from approximately 370 million kWh in 2021 to 584 million kWh in 2025, with total estimated savings reaching 2.25 billion kWh over five years. The study highlights how energy labeling can support electricity conservation, reduce associated carbon emissions, and contribute to Vietnam’s sustainable energy goals.

Why is it important?

Viết As air conditioning becomes increasingly widespread in Vietnam, reducing its electricity consumption is essential for improving energy security and addressing climate change. This study provides quantitative evidence of the potential benefits of energy labeling and consumer awareness programs. The estimated savings of 2.25 billion kWh over five years demonstrate how energy efficiency policies can make a meaningful contribution to reducing electricity demand without compromising household comfort. These findings are particularly important for policymakers, energy regulators, manufacturers, and consumers. They highlight the need to strengthen energy efficiency standards, promote high-efficiency air conditioners, and improve public awareness of energy-saving choices. The lessons from Vietnam may also help other developing countries facing rapidly growing cooling demand achieve their energy efficiency and climate goals.

Perspectives

From our perspective, energy labeling is more than a tool for informing consumers; it is an important policy instrument for promoting energy efficiency and supporting sustainable development. Our findings suggest that even relatively simple measures, such as providing clear energy efficiency information and encouraging consumers to choose higher-rated air conditioners, can generate substantial electricity savings when implemented on a large scale. However, the effectiveness of energy labeling depends not only on regulations but also on consumer awareness, market transparency, and continuous improvements in appliance efficiency standards. Looking ahead, we believe Vietnam should strengthen its energy labeling policies, encourage the adoption of high-efficiency technologies, and improve public communication about energy-saving choices. We hope this research will provide useful insights for policymakers and inspire similar initiatives in other developing countries pursuing energy security and low-carbon development.
