What is it about?
This review focuses on the various pharmacological properties of O. europaea L., particularly its anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. it was concluded that OE fruits have good numbers of valuable constituents contributing to biological activity like anticancer property where triterpene compounds named hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein, erythrodiol, oleacein and oleocanthal showed significant antiproliferative activity along with apoptosis and angiopreventive activity on cancer cells. Also, Anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties has been equally exhibited by the plant; the constituents responsible were maslinic acid, ursolic acid, oleuropein, and hydroxytyrosol mostly present in n-hexane extract of O. europaea fruits.

Why is it important?
OE is a plant having a significant role in herbal medicine. The active molecules contributing to its pharmacological properties are secoiridoids. Out of all the secoiridoids compounds, Ole is of great significance because it is used for the characterization of different varieties of OE and also, exhibits anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities in purified form at low doses. Apart from Ole, erythrodiol and hydroxytyrosol are important anticancer molecules belonging to the triterpene family; it exhibits both apoptosis and inhibition of cell proliferation.
Perspectives
Future prospects of this plant are to synthesize active molecules such as Oleuropein, Oleacein, hydroxytyrosol and Oleocanthal in the laboratory to get an effective anticancer and antiangiogenic molecule(s) for cancer therapy.
