What is it about?

The green synthesis of nanocomposites using plant extracts offers an eco-friendly alternative to conventional chemical methods. In this study, ternary CuO/TiO₂/ZnO (CTZ) nanocomposites were synthesized using *Zea mays* (corn silk) extract. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, SEM, XRD, and EDX techniques. The results confirmed the formation of crystalline nanocomposites with a spherical shape and an average particle size of 31 nm. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against *Staphylococcus aureus*, *Escherichia coli*, and *Klebsiella pneumoniae*. The highest antibacterial activity was observed against *E. coli*, with an inhibition zone of 30 mm. The CTZ nanocomposites showed better antibacterial performance than individual metal oxide nanoparticles and promising preliminary antibiofilm activity. These findings highlight the potential of corn silk-mediated synthesis for developing eco-friendly antimicrobial materials, although further studies are required to establish their safety and practical applications.

Why is it important?

Eco-friendly method: It uses corn silk extract to prepare nanocomposites, reducing the need for harmful chemicals. Waste utilization: Corn silk, an agricultural by-product, can be used as a valuable natural resource. Strong antibacterial activity: The nanocomposites showed effectiveness against three harmful bacteria, particularly E. coli. Improved performance: Combining CuO, TiO₂, and ZnO produced better antibacterial activity than using the individual metal oxides. Potential medical applications: These nanocomposites may be useful in developing antibacterial coatings, wound-care materials, and other antimicrobial products, subject to further safety testing. Biofilm inhibition: Their preliminary antibiofilm properties may help in future research aimed at controlling bacterial growth on surfaces.

Perspectives

The present study offers a promising approach to developing eco-friendly antibacterial materials using corn silk extract. The combination of CuO, TiO₂, and ZnO showed enhanced antibacterial activity against different harmful bacteria, highlighting the potential benefits of ternary metal oxide nanocomposites. In the future, these materials could be explored for applications in antibacterial coatings, water disinfection, wound-care materials, and other antimicrobial products.
