What is it about?

We make Lutein-loaded NLCs for topical delivery for enhanced sun protection. Lutein NLC was dispersed in gel to obtain a product with cosmetic appeal and capable of protecting skin from photodamage. The use of NLC in sunscreen compositions with a high sun protection factor (SPF) is relatively a new breakthrough.

Why is it important?

The tiny size allows for intimate contact with the stratum corneum increasing drug penetration into the skin. Increased skin moisture is also seen due to the occlusive characteristics of lipid nanoparticles. Following NLC application, skin moisture causes a decrease in coenocyte packing and an increase in the size of coenocyte gaps. This will aid percutaneous absorption and drug penetration into the deeper layers of the skin.

Perspectives

The perspective behind this research was to exploit the technique of nanoformulation in cosmeceuticals. By formulating lutein into nanostructured lipid carrier the sun protection factor was improved, hence boosting the product profile of a sunscreen gel.
