What is it about?

Francisella tularensis(Ft) is a soil pathogen that causes Tularemia The current state of research related to Ft classification and factors that help its prolonged existence in soil is limited. The research applies machine learning models instead of contemporary models for understanding the behavior of the pathogen in the environment.

Why is it important?

Francisella tularensis is a contagious intracellular bacterium of the northern hemisphere known to medical science. The pathogen is a category-A bio-terrorism agent that can persist in soil for months and years. Work related to the pathogen’s classification and factors affecting its prolonged existence in soil is limited to statistical measures. It is the first time that our research classifies and identifies the most significant features that contribute towards the survival of the pathogen in soil.

Perspectives

This was my first PhD research article and my co-supervisor Prof. Muhammad Usman Ghani and director Prof. Irshad Hussain greatly helped me in achieving this endeavor. I hope this article would serve as a beacon of light for researchers who are trying to build epidemiological models for soil-borne pathogens using machine learning.
