What is it about?
Free treatment for HIV infection was announced in India on 1st April 2004, and since then we have come a long way in the management of HIV. Patients have improved life span and quality of life. To assess the current survival of adult HIV patients in India who have been enrolled on the treatment program, and to study the factors associated with their survival, a study involving three HIV treatment centres from Delhi, Pune and Kolkata was done.

Why is it important?
This study highlights the areas of HIV care that can be improved in India.
Perspectives
Having a multi centric cohort is a strength of this study. It shows that the mortality rate is better than the crude death rate in India. Early initiation of ART should be encouraged. Having a control group would have added to the strength of the study.
