What is it about?

The primary concern of this article is to highlight the mouth-dissolving wafer technology for buccal administration and targeting of drugs. For the benefit of future research in the field of buccal administration of drugs, the authors also covered the current constraints related to wafer technology, its future implications, pernicious buccal ailments, and the present state of the art in buccal-targeted drug delivery. Polymer-based matrices containing different APIs are used to develop mouth-dissolving wafers, which are used for buccal drug delivery. These wafers are unique and quite effective for a targeted local impact in conditions particular to the buccal region, and they disintegrate swiftly in the oral cavity. It needs not to be administered with water, like in conventional tablet dosage form. The wafers gained popularity with better compliance among the pediatric and geriatric groups owing to their ease of administration.
