What is it about?
Motor neuron diseases like ALS destroy the nerve cells that control movement, leading to progressive weakness, paralysis, and eventually death. Current treatments only ease symptoms and slightly slow the disease; they cannot stop or reverse it. This review examines stem cell therapy as a possible new approach. Certain stem cells (especially mesenchymal stem cells) appear safe and may help stabilise the disease for a time by protecting remaining nerve cells and reducing inflammation. Other stem cell types show early promise for future personalised treatments. While results are encouraging, larger studies are still needed. Stem cell therapy is not yet a cure, but it is one of the most hopeful options currently under investigation.

Why is it important?
Motor neuron diseases like ALS are currently incurable and take away a person’s ability to move, speak, and eventually breathe. Existing medicines only manage symptoms and offer limited benefit. This review brings together the latest evidence on stem cell therapy, showing which approaches appear safe and which show early signs of slowing the disease. By summarising the progress and the remaining challenges, it helps researchers focus future efforts and gives patients and families a clearer picture of a potentially important new treatment direction.
Perspectives
This review highlights both the real progress and the remaining gaps in stem cell research for motor neuron diseases. While mesenchymal stem cells currently show the most practical promise in terms of safety and possible short-term stabilisation, the field is still far from offering a reliable treatment. The careful summary of clinical and preclinical evidence helps set realistic expectations and points researchers toward the key issues that still need solving, better delivery methods, clearer patient selection, and longer-term studies. It is a useful and timely contribution that keeps the focus on evidence rather than hype.
