What is it about?

What’s the role of the sun in producing a new rigid diol? If you look around, the green reactions are trying to fetch the topmost place in synthetic organic chemistry. This study is a try to step upward by using renewable energy (solar energy), a safer solvent (isopropyl alcohol), and producing remarkable atom economy (88.5%) and yield (84.5%) in a metal-free diol formation process. The synthetic methodology to for diol is evolving, and this study represents an interesting process to achieve rigid diol from ketone starting material. The anthropinacol product is constituted with four benzene rings, which are situated like strong aromatic pillars, while the diol groups are stable to interact. The HOMO and LUMO gap of 5.56 eV shows the factual stability of the rigid diol.

Why is it important?

It's ok if someone found a new methodology, but what’s the use of a rigid diol? In the modern era the rigid diols are getting used as intermediates in syntheses, copolymers in polyesters, deriving biodegradable polymers, etc. The current study is meant to dive into the medicinal chemistry of rigid diol. The ADME-T studies refer to a good bioavailability and less toxicological profile of the diol. Predictions suggest that the molecule can penetrate the Blood-Brain-Barrier and can act as P-glycoprotien substrate. These findings indicate that the diol needs more in vivo and in vitro studies.

Perspectives

The work suggests an achievement in synthetic photochemical methodology and the ADME profile of a rigid diol, but still more rigid diols with conjugation, bulkiness, and different functional groups shall be synthesized to watch out for their electronic and structural influence of methodology.
