What is it about?

What are the factors that may influence the efficiency of flushing for sediment removal? In this article, we try to establish the effect of sediment particle size, sediment bed thickness, and distance of sediment bed from the flushing gate on the efficiency to remove sediment bed.

Why is it important?

All the factors explored by this article are important in the design of an efficient flushing device. A simple equation to relate all these factors to the number of flushes needed to totally cleaned 1 m length of the bed was proposed.

Perspectives

This findings and understanding gained from this paper were used in my subsequent work in designing flush gate for sedimentation control in open drain system.
