What is it about?

For more a century, the origin issue of the Algerian foggara (qanat/karez) has sparsely been touched. The aim is to address an overview of the main achieved works on the question and see what could be figured out.

Why is it important?

The subject seems important for two major reasons. The development process of old water structures may indicate a correlation between the evolution on water technology and the climate change during the first millennium in the North Sahara. Moreover, as a water system, the foggara can contribute to check some historical thesis about the related region history.

Perspectives

Beyond the climate change issue, the interest is to synthesize the foggara water heritage in both tangible and intangible dimensions. My search interests go, moreover, to learn about the relationship between water and human settlement.
