What is it about?

Intermittent water supply systems are highly complex in terms of operation and management because of the interaction of many external and internal causal factors. This paper outlines major causes of water supply intermittence and explains how these causes have sustained this supply mode in Zambia's capital city, Lusaka.

Why is it important?

Discussing factors that cause and sustain the intermittent water supply mode, using Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company as a case study, provides a new direction of thought. This is meant to direct efforts towards handling the root causes of problems associated with intermittent water supply rather than handling the effects of the problems.

Perspectives

This paper made me understand the complex nature of the causes of intermittent water supply systems and challenges that are involved in removing them. It is my hope that this paper will inspire many to seriously consider resolving intermittent water supply problems from the external causes rather than from the problems' effects perspective.
