Providing continuous water supply to households in Indian cities has proved challenging. Based on a review of a successful pilot project in Karnataka, this study identifies opportunities and barriers in scaling up the pilot projects nationally.

Why is it important?
Continuous water supply has several benefits over intermittent water supply, especially in terms of water quality and convenience. Yet, there is no one-size-fits-all way to develop this. Local conditions, including the drivers and opinions of local stakeholders vary considerably. Hence, plans and policies should be tailor-made for each area, which requires space, scope and capacity to be created for involvement of residents and local government.
