What is it about?

This paper compares levels of access to tap water, per capita water use and water stress (demand vs supply) in towns, municipalities and provinces in South Africa. It illustrates the results in maps and calculates Gini indexes. It also makes recommendations about new indicators to incorporate inequality into the SDG 6.

Why is it important?

It provides a complete dataset of water inequality in the country, making the Department of Water Affairs' All Towns Study more meaningful and accessible. It highlights areas of extreme water poverty and inequality.

Perspectives

In this PhD paper, I read through 830 individual reports on town and city water balances and extracted the data to create a useful dataset. I hope this time consuming job is useful to others!
