What is it about?
Free-living amoebae (FLA) are a group of protozoans that are capable of transmitting fatal conditions to humans. Naegleria sp. is considered as one of the FLAs that causes fatal brain infection to humans that almost always results in the death of its host. Transmission of this organism is through accidental inhalation of contaminated water while swimming.

Why is it important?
Isolation of potentially pathogenic FLA helps provide public awareness of the presence of FLAs that can cause fatal conditions in lakes which are sometimes a center of recreational activities.
Perspectives
This article will help provide awareness to the community sorrounding lakes especially in the Philippines where conditions brought about by FLAs are less studied and cases have not been documented. Moreover, the Philippines is considered as a country that possesses several lakes that are yet to be studied for the presence of potentially pathogenic FLA such as Naegleria.
