What is it about?
Social equity is an important aspect of society. The concept of equity should help inform how vital services like sanitation are provided to ensure that everyone, including the most vulnerable people can access these services. This paper examines a potential way to assess the equity of sanitation services using key criteria.

Why is it important?
Global inequality is a pressing issue of our time at both an international and domestic issue. Access to critical services like water and sanitation can make a huge difference in people's health and general quality of life. Therefore, finding ways to make it more accessible to everyone is incredibly important.
Perspectives
I found this paper challenging to write because I wanted it to both be very specific to the South African context, but also general enough to be applied elsewhere. There is also my own concern about writing this as an "outsider" who has not had to live through many of the challenges that people living in informal settlements face on a daily basis. I appreciated how many people I spoke to through interviews and site visits were willing to give me some of their time and share their experiences.
