What is it about?
For the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector, 'sustainability' often means the continued functioning of water and sanitation technologies. It is time to broaden this perspective so services can meet the needs of current and future generations and contribute to achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This paper uses the planetary boundaries framework to identify four future directions for water and sanitation services to better contribute to environmental sustainability.
