What is it about?
We examined different ways of dealing with trash in pit latrines. We developed new tools for removing trash before emptying. In general, pumping out the fecal sludge simultaneously with trash is problematic.

Why is it important?
There are 1.77 billion people who use pit latrines worldwide. There are no real mechanical emptying devices that are mechanized but cheaper than vacuum trucks.
Perspectives
It is important to harness the expertise of environmental engineers in solving problems along the sanitation chain. Pit emptying and transport are often overlooked, but very important in protecting public health and making the sanitation chain sustainable.
