What is it about?

Biosand water filters are an effective way to improve water quality, but need to be tested over time to know when they are no longer producing safe drinking water. This study examines biosand filter effectiveness over time in rural Rwanda using an indicator feasible for use in this type of setting.

Why is it important?

Evaluation of water quality using the recommended laboratory tests is not always feasible in rural communities, but it is essential that communities be assured that filters are producing drinkable water.

Perspectives

The community of Cyegera has been integrally involved in this process including bringing forward the initial research question: how do we know the filters are still working? This community has also been irreplaceable in the lead author's educational process and is considered her second home.
