Water supply network operation using desalination

What is it about?

This paper presents the planning approach used to demonstrate that operating the network connected Gold Coast Desalination Plant was the best value way to provide water to our customers when a critical, conventional water treatment plant was taken offline for maintenance. The decision was supported by network modelling, system risk mapping and financial analysis.

Why is it important?

Despite desalination having a higher treatment cost ($/ML) than conventional water treatment processes, it was more cost effective to the long term network operation to use existing assets in a flexible way, rather than invest in more conventional capital projects.

The paper shows how engagement with a broad range of stakeholders can produce innovative outcomes, and how our knowledge of the network can help support decision making.
