What is it about?

In my article "Espíritu y dialéctica", published in Tópicos, Revista de Filosofía in 2022, I explore the concepts of "spirit" and "dialectic" as presented in Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit and Kierkegaard's The Sickness unto Death. My aim is to examine whether these concepts, despite arising from different philosophical traditions, share commonalities that could bridge the thoughts of Hegel and Kierkegaard. I begin by analyzing how each philosopher defines and utilizes these concepts, seeking points of convergence and divergence to understand their respective approaches to the development of self-consciousness and the role of negativity in the formation of the self.

Why is it important?

This comparative study is significant because it brings together two influential yet often contrasted philosophical figures. By analyzing their respective understandings of spirit and dialectic, I aim to uncover deeper insights into the nature of selfhood, freedom, and the process of becoming. This exploration not only enhances our comprehension of Hegel's and Kierkegaard's philosophies but also contributes to contemporary discussions on subjectivity and the human condition.

Perspectives

"Although the sketch of the Kierkegaardian concept of spirit shares several points of contact with that of Hegel, it remains to be demonstrated how the spirit relates to itself. That is, how does the spirit in Hegel and Kierkegaard relate to itself?"
