Why is it important?
Visual perception of the skyline has grown to become an important theme in the planning and assessment of tall buildings. in recent decades the development of tall buildings has been controversial in the Netherlands, because of the visual encroachment on the surrounding landscape. Also, concerns about the appropriateness of tall buildings in the urban environment, the iconic quality of their architecture, and their impact on local real estate markets is increasingly reflected in municipal and metropolitan policy-making. Therefore, several Dutch towns and cities have felt the need to regulate the planning and construction of this specific building type.
Perspectives
Many discussions on architecture or urban design are based on facts and reason. When it comes to tall buildings the debate becomes often heated and emotional, both by opponents and supporters of high-rise development. Bringing some rationale into the debate is a very necessary thing to do.
