Extended-release hydrocodone patient considerations

What is it about?

With the controversial approval of an extended-release formulation of the opioid analgesic hydrocodone by the FDA, many clinicians were hesitant about prescribing the various formulations with and without an abuse deterrent. Issues surrounding the appropriate use of extended-release hydrocodone are discussed in this manuscript.

Why is it important?

Extended-release opioid medications for chronic pain are becoming more commonly prescribed. However, many physicians have little experience with them. Here, we discuss many of the important issues that a physician and patient must take into account when considering extended-release hydrocodone, or any extended release opioid.
