What is it about?

Chest pain is common and any heart problem needs to be ruled out. When chest pain is not related to a heart condition, it is called non cardiac chest pain. It is commonly associated with heart burn and anxiety. This review is about any long term problem in patients experiencing non cardiac chest pain.

Why is it important?

It is important to know if there is any long term heart problem in patients who experience non cardiac chest pain. In our review, we identified many articles supporting good long term outcome in patients with non cardiac chest pain patients . However, a few articles conclude that patients with non cardiac chest pain after many years could develop heart problems. The average age of patients studied in this articles were 55 and most of these patients had risk factors like high cholesterol. Many studies also support that patients with non cardiac chest pain have anxiety.

Perspectives

Non Cardiac chest pain is common. Many studies conclude that long term outcome is good. Few studies conclude that non cardiac chest pain especially in patients age 55 and above after many years could experience heart related problems. Overall, non cardiac chest pain patients should quit smoking, exercise regularly, have good cholesterol control and monitor their diet.
