What is it about?

A new patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument has been developed to assess the severity of irritable bowel syndrome in patients with diarrhea (IBS-D) participating in clinical trials. This article describes an assessment that has been performed to determine its potential to be translated into 10 languages: Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish (Mexico), and Spanish (US) and actual translation into Japanese and US Spanish. The results show that this instrument has the versatility and potential to be used internationally.

Why is it important?

The results of this translatability assessment show that the IBS-D PRO instrument is worded in a manner that is easily translated into numerous other languages. These linguistically validated versions can be used in future research to assess content validity and psychometric properties, and have the versatility and potential to be used in multinational trials to evaluate the benefits of treatment for IBS-D.
