What is it about?
we compared the anatomic and visual outcome of scleral buckle surgery in a Ghanaian population over two time periods using different surgical and retinopexy techniques with a longer duration of follow up. We also assessed the outcome of revision of scleral buckles in eyes with failed buckles.

Why is it important?
The anatomic and visual outcome of scleral buckle was similar despite the improvement and trend towards minimally invasive techniques in recent times. We have shown that the success of scleral buckle can be maintained beyond 1 year in a West African population. We also found that revision of failed scleral buckles can achieve good anatomic and visual outcome.
Perspectives
Most studies on scleral buckles in Africa have short duration of follow-up and the success of revision of scleral buckles following primary failure of buckles is lacking. This study has provided information on the success of scleral buckles up to 1 year and beyond in an African population and the outcome of revision of scleral buckles.
