What is it about?

We have investigated for the first time in Qatar the prevalence rate of physical illnesses among patients with severe mental illness (SMI). Diabetes was the most frequent medical comorbidity, followed by hypertension, and dyslipidemia. We found that patients with SMI are less likely to receive standard levels of care for their physical illnesses.

Why is it important?

Our findings provide the prevalence of physical illness as well as the weaknesses in the care of patients with SMI in Qatar that can be avoided in future practice. Future practice should focus on the provision of higher levels of medical and preventative care to patients with physical illness and SMI. In addition, explicit documentation of diseases and monitoring parameters should be implemented in practice.

Perspectives

I was pleased to work with multiple authors who have great knowledge and research experience in psychiatric diseases. In the near future, I hope that practitioners in Qatar maximize their care for such population.
