Empathy for pain differentially modulates alpha/beta and gamma oscillations.

What is it about?

Viewing painful movie induced the modulation of alpha/beta oscillations over right central, left parietooccipital region, while that of gamma band over right centrotemporal region. The degree of modulation of only gamma band is correlated with Visual Analog Scale. Thus we assume frequency dependent modulation would reflect different functions, i.e affective/cognitive functions and sensorimotor functions.

Why is it important?

Frequency dependent modulation including gamma band was revealed. We also confirmed inhibition of motor evoked potentials by viewing the same movies. Thus we suppose that the aversion or intensiveness of painful movie would result in significant difference in gamma band oscillations.
